SCHOOL BOARD GOALS

2015-2016

VISION

In partnership with educators, family and community; Skagway School District will provide rich and rigorous academics that ensure all students will succeed in their education and work.

MISSION

Skagway School District will:

  • Through professional and curriculum development provide a rich and rigorous education for every student.
  • Use proactive and effective communication with parents, community and educators.
  • Provide the tools for each student to succeed to the best of his/her ability.

Goal One:  The Skagway School District will set and meet high expectations for academic achievement, teaching standards, administration accomplishments, and board performance. 

  1. The Skagway School District will achieve a 5 star rating and be a highest performing, and high progress school.
  2. The Skagway School District will finalize and adopt a new evaluation tool for the Superintendent position that contains measurable objectives, and input from the staff and community by August 20, 2015.
  3. The Skagway School District will ensure the availability and use of support services for under-achieving and academically advanced students.
  4. The Skagway School District will review and advocate for additional STEM opportunities for teachers to use in their classrooms.
  5. The Skagway School District will explore the grading system and come up with recommendations for the School Board by the end of next year.
  6. The Skagway School District will produce a study to measure student success after graduation. 
  7. The Skagway School District will provide professional guidance counselor services.

Goal Two:  The Skagway School District will promote effective communication and partnerships with staff, students, parents, local businesses, government and other agencies.

Specifically Utilizing A Multi-Pronged Plan Including-

  1. Skagway School District will sponsor:
    1. School board member sponsored early childhood literacy activity 2 times a year.
    2. Annual community barbeque with school open house for all families.
  2. The Skagway School District will host a high school orientation for grades 8-11.
  3. The Skagway School District will work with the Municipality to ensure the building of a new vocational education building.
  4. The Skagway School District will work with the Municipality and private businesses to fund and build a track.
  5. The Skagway School District will explore ways to enhance the school website and promote utilization.
  6. The Skagway School Board will establish a subcommittee consisting of board members, staff, student, parent, and private citizen to focus on internal and external communications.  This subcommittee will develop a formal communication plan by August 1st.

Goal Three:  The Skagway School District will actively recruit, retain, and develop highly competent, caring, and student focused staff by putting into practice state of the art technology that provides students and staff with full working and learning capability.

  1. The Skagway School District will explore the use of financial bonuses for those teachers becoming certified in areas that benefit students.
  2. The Skagway School District will ensure Skagway School has a highly trained and qualified staff.
  3. The Skagway School District will build a budget to sustain the programs that we have and explore options.
  4. The Skagway School District will ensure the resources for professional development and continuing education.
  5. The Skagway School District will establish a formalized hiring committee and process. 

Goal Four:  The Skagway School District will maintain and improve the School District’s ability to keep students healthy and safe.

  1. The Skagway School District will fund and participate in ALICE training by the end of the 2015-2016 school year.
  2. The Skagway School District will plan, fund, and complete the security measures for the front entrance of the school building.
  3. The Skagway School District will replace any unsafe vehicles that are used to transport students and staff.
  4. The Skagway School District will continue to maintain and improve the school building and ensure that the school facilities are ADA compliant.
  5. The Skagway School District will promote and advocate for healthy eating through the food service program.
  6. The Skagway School District will ensure funding and advocacy for early intervention and vision/hearing services.
  7. The Skagway School District will ensure Child Find happens annually.
  8. The Skagway School District will ensure emergency medication management and emergency procedures are reviewed and implemented.
